Dien Wong on a year in the rattan supply chain, from harvesters to artisans, and why digital tools for artisans have to be practical, inclusive and quick to use.
Over the past year at PasarMIKRO, I have spent a lot of time moving back and forth along the rattan supply chain: first at the source with harvesters, and now working closely with artisans.
Rattan craftsmanship is a skill honed over generations. Today, though, artisans work in an environment that is more competitive and more demanding.
What artisans balance every day
Sustainability is now part of an artisan’s daily reality: working safely, managing materials responsibly and protecting the environment. Those expectations sit alongside very practical responsibilities:
- running daily operations,
- tracking materials and costs,
- keeping quality consistent,
- managing livelihood and cash needs.
When visibility is limited, even small missteps can threaten income and long-term livelihoods.
The phone is already there
Online orders arrive at artisans’ doorsteps, and their children dance to TikTok. Mobile devices are already part of their lives. At PasarMIKRO we see a chance to use that presence for more than entertainment: to make the operational challenges of a modern artisan simpler.
What we learned in West Java
We have been learning alongside the rattan artisan ecosystem in West Java. It has reinforced one clear principle: digital tools are only meaningful if they are practical, inclusive and shaped around real user needs, not assumptions.
So we keep usage simple. Artisans should spend as little time as possible in the tool while they build a digital foundation for their operations. Over time, that foundation:
- improves accuracy and efficiency,
- leads to better-informed conversations with partners and stakeholders,
- strengthens artisans’ position in the ecosystem and builds trust within the supply chain,
- creates a more sustainable, resilient livelihood in the long run.
